Best Restaurants in Scotland

Our reviews of the most memorable restaurants and top places to eat in Scotland such as aboard Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia in the Royal Deck Tea Room for a special lunch dinner or night out to remember

Royal Deck Tea Room Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia

We recently enjoyed lunch in the exquisite Royal Deck Tea Room aboard Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia during a tour of The Queen's ship at Leith docks by Ocean Terminal. It is the first of our top places to eat in Scotland and a must for visitors. Meals and snacks are served by silver service waiters using the original crockery and silverware that would have been used for entertaining Her Majesty's guests. This indulgent treat is fairly priced and for under £30 we enjoyed two different flavours of tea, a well-proportioned carrot cake, a hearty potato and leek soup and also the soup, sandwich and their famous home-made smoked paprika flavoured potato wedges with garlic mayonnaise dipping sauce platter which is pictured below. The sandwich filling is Ayrshire honey roasted ham, tomato and grainy mustard, though several other Scottish ingredient themed fillings are also available.

This unique dining experience caters for up to 133 people on 35 tables with no bookings taken, just turn up and the polite efficient staff will soon have you seated and enjoying the view. The restaurant is licensed so you can enjoy a range of fine wines and even champagne during your memorable visit. Disabled visitors can gain access using what was The Queens personal lift.

Do also visit the old sailors NAAFI shop where you can try and buy their made on-board flavoured fudges. The favourite of the Scottish Recipes team is their rum and raisin and we couldn't resist buying their Christmas pudding, for which they still use the original recipe used for the Royal Family and guests.

MacLeod House Restaurant

Our second choice for best restaurants in Scotland is the Donald Trump MacLeod House Restaurant in the Balmedie area of Aberdeen. This fine dining experience in an 18th Century mansion house is on the Menie Estate of his golf course. We enjoyed their set four course Christmas dinner which also included two amuse bouches from their talented chefs.

Though a beautifully formal setting, we found it to be a most relaxing dining experience. The log fires in the lounge next to deep leather sofas helped put us at ease as we perused the menu and choose this beautifully presented beef fillet en croute with truffle mousseline, fondant potato and kale as our main course.

As a dessert we opted for a belly filling macadamia pecan nut parfait with coffee gel green tea on a sesame sponge.
